What countries can you visit with a Schengen visa — beyond Europe?

Updated 2026-07-14 · every rule verified against official government sources

A Schengen visa is issued for Europe — but it works far beyond it. A valid sticker in your passport waives or simplifies the visa of 23 countries outside the Schengen area: Mexico and Peru for up to 180 days, Colombia, Georgia, the Balkans and Cyprus for 90, Saudi Arabia on arrival, and a simplified e-visa for Türkiye. Why do countries do this? A Schengen consulate has already vetted you — Mexico, Georgia, Cyprus and others accept that vetting instead of running their own.

The fine print that actually matters

1. Entry type matters. Cyprus wants a double- or multiple-entry Schengen visa; North Macedonia and Albania want a multiple-entry visa that has already been used.

2. “Used” matters. Panama, Saudi Arabia and Egypt require at least one entry stamp from the Schengen area — a fresh, never-used visa fails this test.

3. Sticker, not a printout. Türkiye's rule requires an ordinary vignette visa; airport-transit (type A) visas don't qualify anywhere on this list.

And the rule that overrides everything: entry requirements change. Each rule on our Schengen visa (multiple-entry) unlocks page cites its official source with a "last verified" date — re-check it (or your airline's Timatic) before booking.

Frequently asked questions

Which countries can I enter with a Schengen visa besides Europe?
A valid Schengen visa unlocks 23 countries outside the Schengen area, including Mexico (180 days), Peru (180), Colombia (90), Georgia (90), Cyprus (90), Saudi Arabia (visa on arrival, 90) and Türkiye (simplified e-visa). Per-country conditions apply.

Does my Schengen visa need to be used first?
For several countries, yes: North Macedonia and Albania require a multiple-entry visa already used in the Schengen area; Panama, Saudi Arabia and Egypt want an entry stamp. Mexico and Peru only require the visa to be valid.

Can I enter Cyprus with a Schengen visa?
Yes — Cyprus admits holders of a valid double- or multiple-entry Schengen visa (or a Schengen national visa/residence permit) for up to 90 days without a Cypriot visa.

Does a Schengen residence permit work the same way?
It's a different (partly better) list — see the separate EU residence permit unlocks.
